Now in his 40th year, the career  and music of singer, guitarist and songwriter Dylan Wickens has focus, purpose and a story to tell.  Years of working as a sideman and occasional front man with the best in the Toronto roots scene through his twenties and thirties provided time and experience to refine his craft and absorb the best qualities of the musicians he supported as Wickens found his own voice, his own story, his own stage to command.

His 2010 CD offering, Tattoo Black, is widely recognized as a pivotal recording in his career that cemented his place as an artist to watch in the Canadian blues and roots scene. Today, the Wickens’ trio, Dylan Wickens, Al Webster (drums – Colin James, Amanda Marshall, Jeff Healey, Long John Baldry) and Dennis Pinhorn (bass – Danny Brooks, Downchild) known as Dylan Wickens & The Grand Naturals are a swampy blues powerhouse not to be missed.

The Julian Fauth Band – Live At Paintbox Oct 9th, 8:00PM

The Julian Fauth Band Thursday, Oct 9th, 8:00PM

The Julian Fauth Band
Thursday, Oct 9th, 8:00PM

Julian Fauth is a singer and piano player whose style is based on the tradition of pre-war barrelhouse blues and boogie woogie, with infusions of gospel and jazz. He writes his own songs in addition to re-interpreting traditional material.

In his teens he was a protégé of the late Mississippi blues legend Mel Brown.

He plays regularly in Toronto and has played across Canada, in the USA, Western Europe, Russia and Cuba.

He has recorded three CDs for Electro-Fi Records. His first was nominated for, and his second won, the Juno Award for Blues Album of the Year.

He has also received a Maple Blues Award for “Piano/Keyboard player of the year and was nominated for several others. He has opened for Johnny Winter and John Mayall.

In early 2011 while on tour in Western Canada, Julian suffered a serious fall resulting in a severely broken right shoulder. Doctors were not overly optimistic that Julian’s recovery would include regaining his prowess on the piano, but much hard work and over a year of intensive physiotherapy has resulted in Julian pounding the ivories better than ever.

2014…. he’s back as a two fisted barrelhouse piano man, who swings as well as he boogies!

Proof positive is in the grooves of Julian’s album “Everybody Ought To Treat A Stranger Right” which was selected as the “Best Blues Album of 2012” by C.B.C. Radio.

“ Julian Fauth’s music is profound and penetrating. Contemporary Blues at it’s very best” - Sing Out magazine

“ He’s been compared to Tom Waits and Bob Dylan, but Blues Singer/Songwriter Julian Fauth is a true original”. - Toronto Star.

 Wild T and the Spirit – September 25th, 2014

Wild T and the Spirit - Sept 25th

The Paintbox Bistro is proud to present Wild T and the Spirit led by the electrifying Canadian blues-rock guitarist Tony “Wild T” Springer. He is considered by many to be one of the best blues guitarists in the world.
Born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, Springer played with a number of reggae and calypso bands as a teenager. He later moved to Canada, settling in Toronto and playing local clubs in a Jimi Hendrix tribute band. He joined Rough Trade in 1986, and following that band’s breakup he launched his own band, Wild T and the Spirit.
Formed in 1990 by Springer with bassist Brian Dickie and drummer Danny Bilan (formerly of Moxy), the band released its debut album, Love Crazy, in 1991. Nazeem Lakay replaced Dickie on bass shortly after the album’s release.
The following year, Springer was invited to play guitar on David Bowie’s album Black Tie White Noise. Following that album and tour, Wild T and the Spirit released their second album, Givin’ Blood, in 1993, and the band toured Canada as a supporting act for Bon Jovi to promote the album.
Givin’ Blood earned a Juno Award nomination for Best Hard Rock Album at the 1994 Juno Awards, and gave the band a Canadian chart hit with “Loveland”.
In the latter half of the 1990s, Springer concentrated primarily on songwriting, although the band continued to play concert venues in Ontario with new members Chas Laurie on bass and John Bouvette on drums. The band reemerged in 2000 with the new album Strange Modern. Laurie left the band soon after the release of Strange Modern.
The band followed up with True Bliss in 2004, with drummer Brian Lass and bassist Guenther Kapelle. Jeff Healey and Carole Pope also appeared on True Bliss as guest musicians.
In 2008 the band released the album Fender Bender on Jazzhaus Records and continued on with their heavy tour schedule. The new album was received well by fans and critiques alike.
The current lineup consists of Wild T, bassist Guenther Kapelle and drummer Dave Langguth.

 Jully Black – September 13th, 2014

Jully Black - Sept 13th

For a rare appearance in an intimate setting “Canada’s Queen of R&B/Soul’ brings her dynamic show to the Paintbox featuring music from her upcoming release “Made In Canada”. This is a show you won’t want to miss.
Proceeds from this event will be donated to the Archie Alleyne Scholarship Fund
From opening for Kanye West in Singapore to being hand picked to perform for the Queen; from performing on the same bill as Celine Dion at the 2012 Jamaica Jazz Fest to being the main act for Canada Day celebrations in London, England, Jully Black has perfected her explosive live performance that showcases her unique and powerful voice as well as her ability to engage audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Jully consistently and effortlessly exceeds expectation, leaving fans inspired, entertained and awe-struck by her commanding yet endearing presence and the ability to create a personal connection with those who witness her in her most favored element – on stage.  She has brought tens of thousands of people to their feet in venues around the world and has received extraordinary reviews from critics and fans alike. A Jully Black performance is without question, an experience like none other. A force to be reckoned with, this Canadian-born, triple threat (singer/songwriter/performer) loves to share her talents and has an enthusiasm for music that is unparalleled. Her charming attitude and charismatic personality has helped propel her career to reach milestones that most artists struggle to achieve in a lifetime – winning multiple Juno awards, penning songs for the likes of Nas and Destiny’s Child as well as performing along side artists such as Elton John, Etta James, Jay-Z, Sean Paul, and Alicia Keys to name a few. There is no question as to how she has achieved the status of “Canada’s Queen of R&B”, a title given to her by her fans and peers. Her fourth highly anticipated album, entitled “Made In Canada ” has been described as “The New Motown Sound”. Traditionally, Jully is from the school of R&B, with influences like Etta James and Tina Turner. She has combined these sounds with the rhythmic and eclectic musical styling’s of the album’s sole producer YoungPete Alexander from Atlanta, GA. The songs that reside on this album span the music genre spectrum, incorporating elements of Soul, R&B and Pop. Collectively known as “The Officials”, the two have been able to create a musical masterpiece of which the world can relate.
